Brian's ISO manager wants to "create a document in Word97 that
display[s] certain text when opened but [does] not print this
certain text, even though it's visible on screen."

I haven't tried this, but suspect it will work -- provided that
you're not otherwise using hidden text in the document:

(1) Apply "Hidden" font formatting to the text in question. You
can do this text-chunk-by-text-chunk, but it would probably be
easier to create and use a style that includes "Hidden" font
formatting.
(2) From the Tools menu, select Options.
(3) On the View tab, under Non-printing characters, select Hidden
Text.
(4) On the Print tab, under Include with document, make sure that
Hidden Text is not selected.

Cheers,
Jan
