Alan Cooper wrote the book _The Inmates are Running the Asylum_ about the
deficiencies in the software development process and the consequences, both
economic and human, of these problems. And he poses some solutions.

It's an entertaining and slightly frightening read, sort of like a cross
between Dilbert and certain posters on this list.

Cooper has written other books, too, but this one is most relevant to those
of us who live in the world where developers don't write specs and nobody
forces them to. I've never been a great fan of rigid processes, but I hate
utter chaos, too. I'm currently reading this book, and I find that he
sometimes seems to overstate the case for effect. Still, it's worth reading,
because it hits home!
