Chastity,

Don't apologize for being a newbie. Everyone was once.

Karen Schriver's Dynamics in Document Design is a great place to start. If you want to pursue some of the foundations, from a graphic arts perspective, a good author to start with is Bruce Rogers. He was the dean of American book design in the first half of the twentieth century. You can also look at publications of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Their Fifty Books of the Year exhibit catalogs provide illustrations of great innovative designs that nonetheless conform to the basic principles.

HTH,

Dick
