<snip>
Found an interesting salaryt survey site conducted
by "computerjobs.com".
I don't know if it's accurate, but at least they
recognize technical writer as a separate job skill
and category.
</snip>

I thought the questions on the survey were very
limiting... I kinda fit some of the choices in the
pull-down menus. I don't think there's a salary survey
out there that best represents the markets these
days... sure we're all writers, but we're all in
different fields. Some document mainframe systems,
others web apps, others med equipment, and others
banking and finance. I'm sure I left hundreds of other
possibilities out...

Perhaps we should design a mega-robust survey... one
that takes into account market, task, position,
location, company size, age*, gender*, race*, years of
experience, product scope, and other factors... then
again, who has time to do all that?

(* these ideally should have no impact on the results,
but as this is the real world, we unfortunately have
to admit that age, gender and race do limit/aid some
folks' pay)
