Uma,
Here's another suggestion for your grab-bag: Sometimes Word hangs onto the
temp files it creates when it opens a document. You might try closing Word,
doing a search for all .tmp files and then deleting them. If you're on
Windows, you may have to have the option to display hidden files turned on.
(In File Manager, select View-->Options, and then select the "Show All
Files" radio button.)

This is actually a good thing to do regularly anyway, since those files can
be huge and they can confuse Word.
