I would like to thank everyone for their offers to help and to look at my
document. I could not send it, as so often in our line of work it is
confidential material. I got a lot of good ideas for things to try,
unfortunately none of them worked. I went ahead and copied everything before
and after the weird characters (with a few characters to spare) into a new
document and fixed the formatting.
While doing that I found another such weird spot near some tables (the first
problem was not even close to those tables. I was able to get rid of it, it
was related to a cross reference. I use cross references for my Section
TOCs. The first problem was probably also related to a cross reference, or a
fieldcode in the footer.
I told my boss that this was another reason that I really should use Frame
in our next project. She might approve it this time, because I was REALLY
REALLY ticked off this afternoon.
