Nope, never worked there. But a tip from a recovering former federal public
servant: look up the Department of Supply and Services in the blue pages of
your phone book, and see if you can get passed on down through voicemail
hell until you reach one of their print buyers. Nominally, these people are
only supposed to provide printing advice to government employees, but if
you're polite, and they're in a good mood and not too busy, they can
probably provide you with a few good suggestions (plus suggestions on who to
avoid). If you like playing headgames, you could also gently remind them
that you're paying their salary with your taxes, but that's definitely not
the first card to play. <g> You could also contact the Communications
department of most major government departments (e.g., Industry Canada,
Natural Resources Canada) and ask to talk to their editors or publications
specialists, but that's a more roundabout route; I used to handle print
buying, but I didn't work in Ottawa (they tend to farm out the work more
there). Another thought: Contact the National Research Council; they publish
all kinds of stuff, so their editors or communications managers should be
able to point you towards some likely contacts.
I imagine a similar approach would work well in Washington, or any other
large government town.
