Ken Bowes asked about writing a "Troubleshooting Guide" for an e-learning project. John P pointed him to the web for examples and that is valuable advice but I would also strongly advise
1. Reading chapters 1-5 of John Carroll's Nurnberg Funnel to get a feel for the user state when people are in learning/doing mode. Understanding the user learning agenda is a pre-requisite to all design BUT even more so when you are addressing problem resolution.

2. Browsing articles about web usability if the e-learning environment is web-based. The internet is itself an issue for people managing self-directed learning.
