If you're using the "Insert - Index" command and one of the preset index styles, choose a different style. For example, choose the one that puts a comma after the index entry, followed by the page numbers, rather than one that right-aligns the page numbers.

I've just created an index in Word (97) but all the entries with lots of
page numbers wreck the formatting...they run into the entry word and don't
align on the right hand side. I would usually mess about with it myself to
find a solution but its kind of urgent...can anyone enlighten me on how to
format it?
