David Mertz has recently published a very good introductory article on
the DocBook XML DTD. It's available at the IBM developerWorks site:

I highly recommend taking a look at the article if you're looking for
"how to" information on authoring documents in XML.

At the end of the article, David makes it clear that it's just the
first in a series of articles on DocBook that he has planned:

  This column provides you with only enough information to get a
  general sense of DocBook. Subsequent columns will cover DocBook tags
  in greater detail and describe how they are structured. In addition,
  I have yet to discuss how to convert DocBook documents to more
  directly readable formats, how to validate them, and how to perform
  processing operations on them. Stay tuned.

His e-mail address is included, so I'm guessing he would welcome
comments on the article, and suggestions on what he might want to
include in the other DocBook articles he has planned.
