What's the best software suite, and where to buy it?

For someone just starting out in some independent TW work,
what do you recommend as a start-up software suite? From
the postings it sounds like Framemaker and Acrobat? Is MS
Office a necessary evil that I'll have to buy? What about
web authoring?
These add up to heavy start-up costs, so here's the second
question....where's the best place to get decent discounts
on these products? Are there software stores at STC or
elsewhere that offer significant savings with membership?
Are auction sites like ebay and ubid too risky to consider?
