G'morning.

Unfortunately, you do need to know about your printers. FrameMaker only
prints to PostScript or PCL printers . . .. In general, cheap desktop
ink/bubble jets don't usually cut it . . . and some PCL HP cheap desktop
inkjets (PCL 3) fail to cut the mustard, also.

You also need to know whether you are sending PostScript fonts to a
PostScript or non-PostScript printer . . .. Are you using Adobe Type
Manager? I recommend you do with PostScript fonts.

WMFs are fine. There should be no problem with those. These are not really
the best format for screen captures, though . . . bmp and other true bitmap
formats might be better.

There should be no conflicts with the other Adobe software, at all.

To print a PDF, you have to use the Distiller printer. To install this
printer on your desktop you need to be logged in as an administrator. Go to
http://www.adobe.com, support, and the downloads section. Download the
adobeppd.exe, which is a self-extracting compressed file. Extract the
Distiller.ppd file to a known location. Go back to adobe.com's support site
and download the Adobe PostScript printer driver for your operating system.
Install the Adobe PostScript printer driver, setting it to print to file,
and select the Distiller.ppd file when prompted. This creates a new printer,
called Distiller, for use only with creating PDFs. You must set this printer
as the default before you Save as PDF from FrameMaker, or if you use
File|Print to create the PDF, select this printer.

Check your version of Adobe Distiller. You need version 3.02. Distiller
comes with FrameMaker. If you have a version of Distiller earlier than 3.02,
install it and download the update from adobe.com's support, downloads
location.

If you still cannot make good PDFs, check the font substitution table in
your Distiller printer. You can initially try substituting TrueType fonts
for PostScript ones on your system. Otherwise, setting fonts TTFs to Type 42
should work well or outlines should get the job done for you.

HTH,

best regards,

Sean
