I agree totally with Mike. I read a professional-type
newsletter the other day (I won't say which one - but
it was communication-related) which included a note
that 'irregardless' does actually appear in some
dictionaries and thus cannot TOTALLY be considered
wrong anymore. (shudder)
Language is constantly changing, and 'new' things
always start out as things that are considered to be
'wrong' but are gradually accepted and become 'right.'
That gets us into the old "does language come from
grammar books, or do grammar books come from language'
argument. After all, language was around millions of
years before there was any such thing as a grammar
book - or a book of any type.
I won't pretend to know the answer to that question. I
just pray that I haven't started a war. <g>
Again, apologies for anything I have said that might
be of offense to someone. Not intentional! Honest!
(it seems that we sometimes have such problems on this
list! Just trying to keep the peace!)
