Have any of the distance classes caused you to do any kind of structured
writing as an exercise? At your stage, a modest portfolio is OK -- just
show that you can research, think, and write effectively.

I've got a crazy suggestion that just might work. If you can download some
freeware online-help development stuff, why not find a programmer who's
developed free- or shareware that clearly needs some help, then offer your
services in exchange for some "street cred"?

Subject: new technical writer

I was looking for advice on starting my job search as a new
technical writer. I have taken some distance learning classes working
toward a certificate in technical writing. I was hoping to get some more
tips on what to bring to an interview and how important the portfolio is for
a newbie. Its hard to get in the door without one, I have found.
