I suppose that avoiding the possessive form for objects is
harmless, but I don't think it's necessary. My understanding
is that the practice has something to do with the misconception
that the apostrophe-S stands for "his" or that it indicates
legal ownership. (If it necessarily indicated legal ownership,
you couldn't say yesterday's paper, Madonna's home town,
or Lincoln's assassin.)
