I would go beyond that, but I am biased by an early background in
hands-on troubleshooting in electronics and building engineering prototypes.
As a result of the years I spent in the laboratory and maintenance (i.e.,
field engineering), I learned that quite often the skilled engineer or
technician can do more with makeshift tools than
less-experienced people can with the finest scopes, bridges, oscillators,
etc. It distresses me a bit to read so many posts suggesting that the main
concern of the writer is having certain kinds of software available. It
wasn't that long ago that we were owrking with WordStar 3.0 and earlier
versions, and still managing to turn out first class manuals and other
products. How about focusing a bit more on the merits of the writer's
professional abilities, and less on the magical things some software is
reputed to be able to do. The finest software is still not as important as
the writer's skills and judgment. - Herm
