Reposting my response from yesterday, since it seems my email server at work likes to insert nasty characters. :(

Look to supplemental school and library publishers such as Millbrook Press, Twenty First Century Books, and Lucent for more accuracy than the traditional textbook publishers. These folks produce the books that your kids use for research reports and the like, selling only to schools and libraries. I've written five books for Millbrook/TFCB, and all have gone through a stringent review and fact-checking process. I am not a scientist, nor do I play one on TV -- I'm a researcher and writer with a love of the subject matter, and a willingness to dig deep for new and interesting information. I also don't like to have my name on a book full of inaccuracies, so I'm rather picky about my research sources and techniques, and make use of SMEs everywhere I can. The publisher helps streamline the process and ensures accuracy through several levels of fact checking, including an expert review. I incorporate all feedback until I have a final draft, then get two more chances to look over th!
e layout for errors before each
book is published.

By comparison, my current book project is for a regional publisher who relies 100% on the author to hand in a final manuscript. Since I'm writing a science book, it's up to me to ensure it is accurate. To that end, I'm running the final ms. past several SMEs before I hand it in.
