I have a question for those of you who hire and manage writers. Have you ever brought someone on board (paperwork filed, and everything) then changed your mind in oh, say, the first 6 days, and let them go? Do people do that?

Yes (violins up and under) I was told on Monday, after a week on the job, that "it isn't working out" although no other details were forthcoming. The nearest I got to reasons was something about "directness issues" whatever that means, and "issues of style" although, I hadn't written much yet and no one had remarked on my writing style. Oh yes, and "this is a very unique place, and they can usually tell in the first week if someone is going to work out or not." How nice.

I got the news and a check for days worked from the HR manager, with charming apologies, but not a word from the lead writer and marketing manager who hired me.

As you can imagine, I'm a little stunned. But hey, at least I got some Framemaker training out of it.

Any thoughts?
