All:

I'm going through what has become for me at least the usual tug-of-war between
documentation and development. The tug-of-war stems in my opinion stems from an
erroneous view by members of development that documentation is subordinate to
the development project. This belief is demonstrated by development feeling
comfortable with trying to define content, some design, and placing limitations
on how documentation will be developed (i.e. meeting with users, what tasks are
appropriate, and so on). Please note, I am not talking about the Project
Manager who is in charge of the project as a whole. I have resisted these
efforts, and worked the project by working with developers as a resource and
presenting by work as a project as a necessary part of the project not a
subordinate piece of the project.

I would like your help in getting some perspective on this. It would be great
to hear similiar stories and why you all think this happens. It would be great
to hear your suggestions, too.
