My CD-rewritable machine has developed a strange ailment. It
continues to read "regular" factory-burned CDs, but when I
insert CD-recordables or rewritables it tries to "play" them as
music CDs.

Is there a manufacturer-specific driver you could try
reinstalling? Or perhaps reinstall the package that allows it to
write to CDs? (My CD-RW required separate software to be able to
write. Don't remember the name of the software at the moment.)
