appropriate person to sign-off on your meeting notes
when you have been instructed to do something
Excellent advice. However, there's another technique
that may be easier to implement (since you run into
some bozos who won't commit themselves in writing!).
In a situation like this, try e-mailing the affected
parties as a follow-up. Something like: "To be sure I
am clear on the decisions made in our meeting..."
Then, put in summary form a point-by-point list of the
decisions arrived at.
Keep these messages. They constitute a modern
equivalent of a "paper trail" when you are in CYA
mode. They also can be surprisingly useful when some
members of a group meeting didn't actually understand
what was going on. They will tend to try to quickly
correct any misapprehensions.
Finally, I'd suggest doing regular backups of this
e-mail onto removable media and keep your copies at
home. This last bit may sound paranoid, but it can be
valuable and is simple to do and might make a
