That doesn't quite define it though. I've known "writers" who could spend
all day with the seat of their pants on the seat of their chairs and still
not have any writing done by quitting time.

I beg to differ. I do think that there is an "internationally recognized
methodology" to writing. I think Mary Heaton Vorse said it best when she
said:

"... writing is the art of applying the seat of the pants to the seat of the
chair."
