Personally, I found that the most satisfying solution was to
uninstall MS Office altogether and use StarOffice instead (on some
machines I uninstalled Windows, too, but you don't have to go that
far if you don't want to). StarOffice has its own shortcomings - to
say the least - but it has good MS Word filters, is quick to learn,
and doesn't suffer from terminal cutesiness.
