Kathy, I think the problem both John and I have with Clippy is that in
Office 97 there was no easy way to permanently hide Clippy.

Clippy could be hidden for the duration of a Word session, for
example, but shut down the application and restart it, and you'd have
to hide Clippy again.

Thankfully, MS addressed this with Office 2000. but by that time I
was already annoyed enough with the paperclip to not be suitably
mollified by having something that should have been available with the
first version.
