What about an online conference that uses something like PlaceWare?
Individuals could present slides over the internet, everyone can listen over
a telephone line, have a live question and answer session, etc. It would
save the cost of airfare, hotels, meeting rooms, etc. Not the same as being
there, but it could be a good way to gain and distribute technical

(Note - PlaceWare only lists the price of annual hosting on their website -
I don't know what the cost of a single event would be.)
