It sounds to me like his text has been "lowered." Go into Format|Font, click
the Character Spacing Tab, and look to see if the Position setting is
anything other than Normal. One of the options under this item is "Lowered,"
which moves the font down X pixels, though it doesn't seem to effect
underlining.

This is just what I could figure out in a minute or so playing with Word
after reading your question. I was able to duplicate what you said he saw on
the screen, though.
