Use the File | Save As option, and save it to the same file name.
When you make changes in a document, Word keeps track of
those changes in its "memory" and the file size bloats. Using Save
As clears this memory.

(Many programs do this. Adobe will even prompt you after you've
done several Save actions, to use Save As to reduce the file size.)
