Marcus,

Regarding your query:

I need to get manuals translated into several languages. Is it possible to convert Framemaker documents into rich text format so the translators can type in their translations?

Yes, use File | Save as and select "Microsoft RTF" in the drop-down Save as type. Depending on your manuals, this may work well ... or not so well.

A better solution is to find translators who use FrameMaker. It will reduce your work up-front and (more significantly) on the back-end, when you'll be pulling your hair out, trying to-reimport RTF files into Frame.

The best approach is to work with translators who use Trados Workbench or a similar translation-memory tool. This technology allows you to streamline the formatting process _and_ reduce your translation time/cost by re-using translated text.

We have found that for some clients, we're able to consistently achieve savings of 30-50%. (I have several informative documents/newsletters that provide insight into the use of translation memories. Email me off-line if you'd like to receive this information.)

Regards,
Andres
