All kidding aside, the best help with Word's numbered lists is
"Don't use them." Honest.

A well-known alternative, using SEQ fields, works like a charm,
especially if you set up a few autotext entries to insert them.
I've posted the technique on this list at least once, but can't
ferret out the text just now.

Search the TECHWR-L archive for "numbering"--I'm sure it'll
turn up.
