The thing is, once you paste the picture into Word, it becomes (by some alchemy) a .wmf type graphic.

I find this is one very good reason to use a tool like PaintShop Pro to create the screenshot or whatever. Manipulate it however you want, save it for reference, then paste it into Word. I never have trouble with file size when using this method.

Word itself is a bit of a crock, but I've had no problems using GIF images
in my Word documents. I suspect that the original poster is talking off the
top of his/her head <stitch!>. I like GIF images because I use the same file
to create both PDF and HTML, and they come out the same in both.
