RTF is the source for the help files. RoboHelp can re-import from the
HPJ and RTF files.

You can do your Search/Replace in Word on the RTF files. Obviously, a
global S/R will get you in trouble. However, you can refine your search
by taking into consideration formatting.

For example, is it double underlined? is it underlined? is it hidden
text? is it of some style (footnote or otherwise)?

Even if you can't refine the search, it still isn't so bad individually
looking at each occurrence of the item to be replaced. You'll want to do
this for the footnotes in any event so that you change only the topic
title ($ footnotes) and keywords (k footnotes) but not any context IDs
(# footnotes).
