I knew I forgot to include something in my previous post.
The Open University (http://www.open.ac.uk/) do a module: M873 "User
interface Design and Evaluation" as part of their Diploma in Computing for
Commerce and Industry.
It's a shorter (15 unit) course, with an optional 2-day residential school.
Unfortunately, it doesn't start 'til November, which is probably way too
late. And the OU courses are often more academic than practical, although
they are reworking the course this year.
Your best bet may be to look for a consultant specializing in usability;
unfortunately, the UK seems to be about two years behind the US in the
regard in which usability is held, so they're thin on the ground. I'm
working toward this role (becoming recognised as the squeaky-wheeled
"usability guru" in our company. Or pain in the arse [sic] as it's fondly
referred to, pardon my Anglo-Saxon), but as you have found out the only
option seems to be personal research and practice.
Often the best approach, if the slowest.
