Thanks to Lucille Lattanzi, Sean Brierly, John Posada, and Mike Starr for taking the time to respond to my "sticky situation" with a particular design engineering manager. Their suggestions have been included in the solution mix to the problem.

P.S. John's suggestion of using a 2 x 4 "persuader" is actually Plan B.
