This thread was: Thinking Patterns (was RE: Interviews (5 Year Question)).

While the thread has taken a humorous tone, advocating lying about your
employment on your passport or to immigration is a very serious matter. It may
get you kicked out of the country you are visiting at the least or even jailed
at worst. In the case of a Canadian attempting to enter the U.S. this may lead
to the inspector banning you from entering the US for up to two years.

"Technical Writer" is a professional title controlled by international treaty
(such as NAFTA) and by various internal job quota and worker control policies in
various countries. The reason that "writer" may get no response from immigration
is that "writer" in the "novel writer" sense isn't a controlled profession.
"Technical Writer" as a profession is something that would (and should) raise
flags to immigration that you may be entering the country for extended work and
that there are visa requirements to be met.

So all of you fantasizing of being "Writers" in any other sense than Technical
Writer should think twice about misrepresenting yourselves.

Eric L. Dunn

I am not a lawyer, etc.
The preceding is opinion (but opinion based on travel experience and wrangling
with U.S. Immigration Officials over NAFTA clauses)
