When asked what he did for a living, a good friend who was a tech writer
for many years until he started doing web development used to say:
"Oh, I sit around watching television and pushing buttons all day."
At one point in his career he was employed by US West (our local
telephone company). Whenever he explained what he did as a technical
writer, he'd say either:
"Oh, I write manuals that tell you how to dial your telephone." Or,
"Oh, I'm a technical writer for US West and am responsible for Ga
through Gh in the US West Yellow Pages."
Needless to say, he was my inspiration for switching from engineering to
technical writing.
