Kat Nagel writes:
I was called into my boss's office this afternoon. RTE "has
re-evaluated the way it handles documentation, in the light of the
current economic situation, and has decided that it would be in the
company's best interest to continue our relationship on a freelance
basis".

Steven J. Owens responded:

3) Discuss with the unemployment folks that your employer
mentioned the possiblity of offering you some freelance
work. Note very carefully that it is a _possibility_,
and that you have no firm offer. Ask what the process
is if you get some part-time freelance work.

Steven's point is a big one. I had exactly the same thing happen to me a few
years ago, in another field. I was fired, "allowed to freelance", and given
the project of building their website. But then the boss (same person who
fired me) never responded to my emails and phone messages about site
criteria, and then a few weeks later a site mysteriously appeared, made by
an employee with a little slack time.
Luckily, I had immeditely hightailed it to my temp agency and was already
working the day after my "freelancing" career started (though I did waste a
couple of week's worth of evenings working on the site).
