and with good reason. because we get paid for words that are in front of us, and with experience those words fly. every now and then someone comes along in translation and says we should be paid like "real" writers, by the hour.

and those of us who have been doing this for a while shake our heads and say, no way would anyone pay us what we can *really* earn in an hour. a colleague once explained that our clients (in our case agencies) could not accept the fact that we can earn more in an hour than the prime minister. but clients understand that an object (the word) has a price tag, and they are wiling to pay it - more for some languages than for others.

in my field, i would never want to be paid by the hour translating *your* words (written by tech writers) - it would hold me back.

in your field (which i would never attempt, because it's to much work to think of the ideas yourself!), i would never settle for pay per word. you need to be paid for the thinking process and the mental blocks, etc.
