Have you ever had some text that you wanted bold, and it wouldn't become bold?

I have tried highlighting the word and hitting ctrl+B, and I've gone under format/font and selected bold. I have made sure the character style is default, and I've re-applied the paragraph style, but I can't get the freakin' text to be bold.

Has anyone ever seen and fixed this?
