Personally, I prefer the control offered by PDFs, but I can't deny that
it's easy to make poor PDFs. Maybe if Distiller offered a chance to
change defaults at the time of creation, the standard of PDFs would be
higher. For example, I almost always want to change the default view on
PDFs to make them more readable.

Actually, I think that Dan was commenting on the limits of HTML design,
not their quality.

Technically, you're right. However, in common use, the distinction
between "open" and "open source" is all but lost.

I can't help noticing that your examples are hardware-related, and
reflecting that I don't know of any major attempt at open standards for
hardware. I think the original comment might be true for software, or at
least truer.
