It depends on where you are. I have way more than 7 years experience, a
good portfolio, and I'm even nice to have around, and there are still only a
handful tech writing jobs of any kind in the whole greater Los Angeles area.
A few more if you include Orange Country (which at a 2-hour 1-way commute, I
can't).

You can't qualify for jobs that aren't there.

Currently being thown into the job market.... I can say that if you have 6
plus
years experience, you're pretty well off. If you have less than that, it is
tough. Although I have over four years tech writing, I'm still running into
all
the same problems I was four years ago - being up against people with more
experience. Heck, I just got a "don't let the front door hit you on the
backside" after standing in line for 2 hours to talk to Boeing today because
they were looking for 7 1/1 years plus and wouldn't even talk to anyone with
less than that.
