As a FT writer, I deal with brief system downtime by:
reviewing previously written documents
reorganizing piles of papers/files/notes, etc.
writing outlines or drawing dataflows (hand-written)
review questions with SME

If the downtime becomes extensive, I do frequently leave for home and
work there. Since I write primarily procedures and policy documents, I
don't usually need access to software or programs.

from John Posada:
If you are a contractor, and maybe if you are a FT, and the
server/network/etc, that you MUST work on, is down, due to no fault
of your own...how do you handle it?

Do you go home and if a contractor, stop drawing your pay for the day
or do you sit at your desk and play games, read emails, surf the web?
