There's a definite prestige hierarchy of publications, which is generally
inversely proportional to how much you get paid. I'll summarize thus:

- article for trade magazine: you get paid, but not much prestige; info is
expected to be practical, not innovative
- article for trade conference: you get paid more, you probably need some
prestige to get in there to begin with, little additional prestige; info is
expected to be practical and comprehensive, but not innovative
- article for peer-reviewed conference or journal: you don't get paid, in
fact you may need to pay for the conference; much prestige, info is
expected to break new ground, or offer some new insight

This is not unique to technical writing. This is the way the world works.
