We may be talking about two types of freelancers here. I was thinking of people for whom writing articles is part of their income. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but you seem to be using freelancers in a broader sense to include anyone not on the magazine staff.

At any rate, if I can write something useful, get recognition it AND get money, I'm going to choose all three instead of just the first two, mercenary soul that I am.

Yet another reason why I write for STC. Plus, I'm a recovering scientist
(and as a Canadian, one of those left-wing socialist types <g>),

Between my comments about anarchism and this remark, the two of us are going to give list members a very strange view of Canada :-)

so I've
been exposed to this quaint notion that sometimes expanding the body of
knowledge shared by a profession, for no obvious reward other than that it's
the right thing to do, is a good thing.

Hmmm - not that I'm recruitng, or anything, but have you thought of getting involved with an open source project? With a philosophy like this, you'd fit in perfectly.

Of course, Microsoft would say that you were "communistic" and "unAmerican," but since you've already admitted to both, that should be no problem for you :-)
