Employers, or agencies, have a right to ask you how much you want in terms
of compensation. They do not have any right to know how much you are or were
making at your last position any more than they have a right to inspect your
tax returns. When someone asks you something that's out of bounds, then,
IMO, you have no moral or ethical obligation to comply. Being "vague" is a
friendly, diplomatic way of handling such situations.
