While I think Steve's approach is great it may create problems when software is
sold that is useable on many platforms but only in one package. But I think this
may be an opportunity that is being overlooked.

How about including a quick start guide that covers all platforms in each
software box, but no detailed manual. The user will then register the software
indication their platform and configuration. The software company then sends a
user manual that is specifically tailored to the platform and configuration. If
there is sufficient difference between platforms, there may even be savings
using a print on demand type system for the manuals. Not only that, but changes
to the manuals could then reach a greater number of users. If some flaw is
detected, you don't have to worry about so many thousands of erroneous docs
included in all the packages.

It might just be the thing that gets users to fill out those registration cards
fully.
