Is JPG a requirement? I really like WMF coming out of Visio. It's a
vector format, so you can resize as you want, and you can have a
transparent background, which is excellent for PowerPoint presentations.
Lines come out perfectly clear and even 8 pt Arial looks great.

Of course, I don't know how WMF graphics look in a non-MS program, so if
you're not a member of the collective, you may need another option. (But
now I read again and Beth, at least, is using Word.)
