If you don't need the job too badly, why bother?

If you are applying for a technical writing position, then
as an erstwhile hiring manager I'd strongly recommend
NOT adding that comment. If you need an explanation of
why they're asking for something, phone first.

It's likely that the company you're dealing with has a
business reason for wanting Word files, and has
implemented the protection measures it needs to use
them safely.

If they don't, it's their problem, not yours (unless you're
working for them).

I'd suggest too that not knowing Word well enough to create
a basic (virus-free) document is not likely to enhance a technical
writer's job prospects.
