I think I disagree with this. I separate the ability to analyze and
understand information from the ability to express it.

But I also think that both abilities are equally necessary for the tech
writer. Otherwise, we have tech types who understand the stuff but can't
write a coherent sentence, and writer types who can write very readable
content but are incapable of anything other than regurgitating what a tech
type tells them.

It's the mesh of these two abilities that creates the wide range writers we
have, and of course the eternal arguments: "how much tech is enough tech?"
and "how can I understand my users if I already know the app?"
