I took a $30,000 cut when I went from a consulting position to a staff
position. There were all kinds of reasons for me to do it, and I've never
been sorry.

I didn't move, so there was no cost of living calculation, but I'll tell
you a secret - it didn't make much difference anyway. In fact, I saw it as
an opportunity to get us (my family) in better financial health than we
were at the time. I went to see a financial planner and *ruthlessly*
trimmed fat out of our budget. She told me that she's never once, in 18
years, seen a budget she couldn't trim 30% out of. My husband was
fortunately in a position to work some overtime, which helped, and we've
been able to get together some retirement savings *and* pay off a great
deal out outstanding debt - all on $30,000 less a year.

With all the salary issues and facing this question myself, I'd like to
hear from people in the list who've taken a job with a salary cut. How
much? Did you move and with the cost of living factored in, did it make
much difference?
