It has been interesting following this thread, but I have a question that I
haven't seen addressed.

Did the company solicit Robert's business, or did Robert bid on a contract?
If the company solicited him, then he has every right to ask for an up-front
payment or deposit. I have known (and worked for) dot-coms that couldn't get
enough credit to have a box of pencils delivered.
